People love to make fun of Kung Fu. They see a guy with a long beard and silk pants hopping around, practicing fancy Kung Fu moves, and say, “That stuff won’t work in a real fight.”
It’s not just Kung Fu, of course. People criticize Karate, Silat, Filipino martial arts… basically, anything that isn’t a punch in the face, knee to the groin, or rear naked choke.
Well, they’re all wrong!
Fancy moves exist for a reason. No, not just to win tournaments. They exist because fancy moves work!
The problem is that most people don’t know how to make them work!
I admit it. A large number of martial artists who practice fancy moves spend more time looking cool than figuring out how to be effective in a real fight.
But keep in mind—at one time, people said you couldn’t kick to the head in a real fight. WRONG! They said you couldn’t take down a boxer. WRONG! You couldn’t pull off a hip throw. WRONG!
In short, nobody believes anything will work until they see it work. And to see it work, you have to make it work.
I’ve talked about fancy moves before in Do Fancy Moves Really Work. I’ve also discussed this topic with Shane Fazen of FightTips.com.
